I grew up as a teenager in south Louisiana and lived there much of my adult life. I didn't realize how much I would miss Louisiana's state bird, the brown pelican, once I moved from there in late 2005. When I moved to Corpus Christi several years later, it was good to be back in the land of pelicans again. I love to watch them in all states of their being. But my favorite is when a group of them are gliding  just above the water's edge in formation. The brown pelican is a saltwater bird, so coastal areas are the only places you'll see these awkward, lumbering beauties.
