What is a Giclée Print?
A Giclée print is the highest quality print available today. The word Giclée is a French word meaning 'to squirt'. The process is digital printmaking with a printer that uses minute droplets of archival ink to create prints that cannot be duplicated by other printing techniques. Because there is no visible dot screen pattern the resulting image has all of the subtle tonalities of the original art. Each dot may have over 4 billion possible colors! This produces exceptional museum quality prints and many large museums around the country have Giclee prints in their collections, such as at The British Museum, The Metropolitan Museum New York, Los Angeles County Museum, Museum of Modern Art New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I have seldom had my work printed. I have found it too difficult to try to reproduce my colors in my paintings because of the many transparent layers I use in my painting process. But recently I discovered an imager who is also an oil artist with a fabulous ability to see color and match it in his imaging process. With the economy in the state that it is, and the requests for prints of my work, I have begun to have my newer paintings printed in limited edition and open runs. With Giclee technology the printer can achieve a reproduction nearly indistinguishable from my original paintings. They are printed on professional archival watercolor paper and the pigmented inks used. Giclees have the same longevity as the watercolors I use in my paintings. The sizes of the prints are approximate and reflect the outer limits of the paper. Most prints have apx. 1" white border. All prints are signed by the artist and limited editions are numbered. Both are accompanied by a giclee certificate of authority. Prints are currently in production for the below referenced paintings.
